Renovation plans? Mandatory sustainability from February

Do you have major renovation plans? Then you may have to make your home more sustainable from 1 February 2022 during the renovation. A new law will apply from that date.

Minimum amount of renewable energy

From 1 February, it will be mandatory to generate a minimum amount of sustainable energy during major renovations. A major renovation means that you renovate or renovate at least 25 percent of the house and that the heating or cooling installation is replaced. Are you going to install a new kitchen? That is not directly covered by a major renovation.

Big investment

Taking measures to make your home more sustainable is becoming increasingly popular. However, not everyone is ready to invest in such improvements to their home. Homeowners have to invest considerably more to realize a renovation. Fortunately, there are a number of subsidies that the government makes available for the sustainability measures.

Until 2024, 288 million euros has been made available for hybrid water pumps and 514 million euros for insulating houses. Be quick because subsidy pots run out quickly! Check the government website to find out how you qualify for a subsidy.

Not many households yet

The measure will not be very drastic yet. In most cases, the new requirements apply to renovations where a house is temporarily uninhabitable and for which a permit is required. According to an estimate by the Financieel Dagblad, it only affects 50 to 250 renovations per year, but there is a chance that this is the start of more compelling sustainability measures for homeowners from Europe.
